Getting Around Punta Cana: Punta Cana Transportation Tips for the Out-of-Towner

About 40% of the visitors to the Dominican Republic arrive through the Punta Cana International Airport. Whether for personal or business, each of these travelers finds themselves looking for Punta Cana transportation. Thankfully, there is a wide variety of options, making it possible for everyone to find what they need.

This guide will help you plan the ideal Punta Cana transport during your visit.

Shuttles

The simplest and easiest way of getting from the airport to your hotel or resort is to book a private shuttle. Booking in advance makes the experience stress-free and can help save you money. You can also plan for the amount of luggage you plan to bring with you by booking a larger vehicle.

If you are interested in a luxury experience, you can book an upgraded shuttle. These services come with a VIP class vehicle, English speaking driver, and beer or water upon your arrival.

Some resorts have their own private shuttle service. When you are a guest, you can arrange for free transport to and from the hotel.

Taxis or Uber

Getting around Punta Cana can be simple when you hire a taxi or uber. Both are available. However, you need to be careful about where you call your Uber too.

There are ongoing disagreements between taxi drivers and Uber drivers. Uber drivers are not welcome at the airport by the taxi drivers. They are also not allowed at many of the resorts.

If you wish to call an Uber to one of these locations, stand at the entrance or gate of the location. You also should avoid using Uber anywhere that has a taxi stand.

Buses

The local bus system is affordable but not always traveler-friendly. There is no place to put suitcases on the bus. The bus system can also turn a 30-minute drive into a three to four hour journey.

The advantage of using the bus is that it is extremely affordable. It will also connect you with the local people for a real adventure.

Rental Cars

Many people consider reserving a rental car when traveling in Punta Cana. All of the major rental car companies are at the airport. It’s best to only plan on renting a car if you have an extended stay or are staying in more than one city.

Driving in the Dominican Republic is chaotic at best. You should have experience with driving where it is unpredictable and unruly. You should also be aware of the potentially increased rates and hidden fees that happen when renting your car at the airport.

Motorbikes

If you are looking for a Punta Cana escape, consider taking a motorcycle taxi. They are called motoconchos and are quite popular. However, they are not available at the airport.

Plan Your Punta Cana Transportation

There are plenty of options when it comes to Punta Cana transportation. Depending on your budget, length of stay, and travel plans, there is a transportation solution that is perfect for you. Perhaps you are staying at a resort and only need an airport shuttle.

You could be backpacking on a shoestring budget and find that the bus is perfect. On the other hand, if you’re staying for a long time, then a rental car may give you the freedom you need.
